London rock art aficionados – and fans of The Beatles – have a one-off chance to view rare John Lennon art at Sotheby’s in New Bond Street, from this Friday, in advance of their auction in New York on 4 June.
If your budget doesn’t run to the estimated $15-25000 price tag of lot 89, above, you can always buy John Lennon art from his Beatles era in the recently reissued compendium of his two delightful books, In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, for under £8 from Amazon.
Nobody realised at the time, but John Lennon art was breaking new ground here. With these two books, Lennon asserted the right of rock musicians to demonstrate their creativity as visual artists and writers.
Here’s the Sotheby’s announcement:
“This sale comprises the most extensive collection of John Lennon’s original artwork, autograph manuscripts and corrected typescripts ever to come to auction.
“The material relates to In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, the two books Lennon wrote and illustrated at the height of Beatlemania in 1964-1965. The collection was given by Lennon to the visionary publisher Tom Maschler, who had persuaded Lennon to write a book of his comic verses and worked closely with him on the production of the books, and comes directly from his private collection.
“Highlights from the sale will be on view in Austin, Texas, 13-14 March, and in London, 21-24 March.
